SAP Calculations for Conversions and Glazed Extensions
If your project is a barn conversion, a single dwelling into flats or a change of use such as an office or shop into a dwelling it is likely that Building Control will ask for Approved Document Part L1b SAP Calculations for conversions or extensions.
The requirement is that controlled fittings and building materials are required to meet set efficiency standards, which can sometimes be more stringent than the requirements for new builds under Approved Document Part L1a.
How does a SAP L1b assessment work?
We will undertake SAP calculations for conversions from plans and construction specifications and ensure that both new and existing features meet the regulation standards required. This includes identifying where existing walls and floors can be left untouched or where new features such as heating and insulation might require improvement to help the overall dwelling achieve a pass.

SAP Calculations for Extensions
If your proposed extension or renovation includes large areas of glazing, it is likely that Building Control will ask for Part L1b SAP Calculations or demonstration of minimum U-value compliance.
Many extension designs do not comply with the minimum standards of Part L1b regulations. The requirement is that the area of new glazing accounts for no more than 25% of new extended floor area however by upgrading or over compensating other construction elements, or perhaps demonstrating additional solar gains the negative impact of larger expanses of glass can be off-set. If the whole dwelling is receiving a refurbishment then there may be many more options available to off-set other elements of construction to show an improvement of the overall energy efficiency of the dwelling. We can guide you through the options which fall into two categories being the 'Whole-dwelling method' or 'Area-weighted calculations' depending on the individual circumstances of your project.
We can also assist you if the construction work has commenced or possibly completed and Building Control has asked for proof of compliance either by demonstrating U-values or undertaking a retrospective SAP assessment.
